Movie Remakes… Now and Later…

Today I got to see the new ‘Fright Night’ and I must say that it was one of the better of the recent remakes. Anton Yelchin, David Tennant and Colin Farrell were all excellent in their perspective roles. Chris Sarandon who played Jerry in the original was classic in his brief cameo. It took a great cinematic team to pull this one off.

Now they are doing a remake of ‘WarGames’ with a 21st century twist. The part that scares me is that the script writer has never written anything that actually made it to the big screen and the director has only done bad movies. Don’t mess with movies from my childhood if your not going to do a good job. ‘WarGames: Dead Code’ was decent enough and played with our fears of terrorist attacks, but nothing will ever equal Mathew Broderick using 7in floppy’s, Joshua’s computer voice or the robot pterodactyl dive bombing them on the beach. Closest thing that could have been a good remake in that style was Die Hard 4.0. These are some big shoes to fill.

On another note there have been some very good ‘remakes’ as of late. The recent twist on ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ was excellent. ‘The Karate Kid’ with Jaden Smith was very well done. Christian Bale has done an good job as the caped crusader. ‘Clash of the Titans’ was also very good. But they should never had let J.J. Abrams anywhere near ‘Star Trek’.

I must say that I am looking forward to Jason Momoa as ‘Conan’. There are a few others coming like ‘The Last Starfighter’, ‘Fahrenheit 451’, ‘Dune’, ‘Short Circuit’, ‘1984’, ‘Red Sonja’, ‘Logan’s Run’, and one that I am looking forward to is ‘The Thing’ which comes out next month.
